who we are

what we believe

Public Power Tompkins is a rapidly growing group of residents who are tired of NYSEG’s skyrocketing rates, dismal billing practices, abhorrent customer service, and unreliable supply. We deserve a utility that listens to us and provides safe, affordable, reliable energy every single day. We’re sick of seeing NYSEG’s shareholder returns continue to rise while we’re slammed with electric bills tipping multiple hundreds of dollars.

More importantly, we’re your neighbors. We’re gig-workers, teachers, laborers, retirees, stay-at-home parents, grandparents, and hobbyists. We’re worried about the cost of living and being able to afford housing, food, and transportation. Like you, we’re tired of being taken advantage of by an overseas mega-corporation and we’re proposing a real, affordable alternative.

we believe in energy for us not for profit

At The Assembly Black, we are dedicated to promoting political engagement, driving positive change, and fostering a community of informed and empowered individuals. Our mission is to create a space where diverse voices can come together to shape a better future for all.

We believe everyone should be able to afford their electric bills and that the energy supplied to our homes, schools, and businesses shouldn’t be making a foreign company richer while our neighbors struggle to keep the lights on. We believe there’s a better option that puts community needs first, not the needs of international shareholders - public power.

We believe in good, union jobs for our neighbors, family, and friends. Public Power Tompkins believes there's another way to provide energy - one that's community owned and community operated.

what is public power

?

Public Power utilities are like our public schools and libraries: a division of local government, owned by the community, run by boards of local officials accountable to residents. Public power utilities can be owned by cities, towns, counties, districts, or states. While each public power utility is different, reflecting its hometown characteristics and values, all have a common purpose: providing customers with safe, reliable, not-for-profit electricity at a reasonable price to protect you and your wallet.
